Drainage 5

In carrying out infrastructure development, drainage is an important additional component to pay attention to. Because the drainage system is one aspect of the building that can make the residents stay more comfortable. For the types of drainage consists on natural and artificial drainage. Now, we want to talk about functions, types, tips, and drainage itself.

Drainage and Its Function

Literally, the definition of a drainage system is an aqueduct built in an attempt to channel excess water mass. Usually, you'll find drainage in any kind of infrastructure like homes, office buildings, even urban.Drainage is a form of regional developer policy as a method to avoid puddles. Besides that, good drainage is also able to minimize flooding.

Drainage Types

The type of drainage divided into two, natural and artificial drainage. Then, the artificial type of drainage consists on several types. Each type of drainage has different characteristics and uses. So, what are the types of drainage? Let's find out it on this article below!

Natural Drainage

As the name implies, natural drainage is a natural source of water flow without the help of human hands. An example of this type of drainage that you can find easily is the river. Rivers and other natural streams are typically formed by the eruption of water, which creates a permanent watercourse.

Artificial Drainage

Besides natural drainage, drainage is a place of water flow that can be made deliberately by humans. This second type has several other different types according to their characteristics.
  1. Subsurface Drainage
Although made with the main purpose of avoiding puddles, some drainage constructions also put aesthetics first. And the subsurface drainage is the one that is applied.  This way make the environment will become more tidy because there are no drain pipes visible from the outside.
  1. Surface Drainage
It is different from the previous one in that surface drainage is intended to avoid puddles that occur on the surface of land.
  1. Open Drainage
Drainage can also be made open or closed. Open drainage is a drainage system that is usually to be found in large urban areas. This type is built to run the water that does not contain hazardous waste such as rainwater. In addition, some places creates open drainage intentionally as a decorator of the surrounding area by adding beautiful decorations on the periphery of the drainage.
  1. Closed Drainage
Closed drainage is actually deliberately made to drain polluted water into hazardous waste. Some examples are plant waste and products with chemicals. That was a classification of drainage based on different characteristics of the building. Besides that, drainage can also be adapted and divided based on its functions. The types are:

Single Purpose

This type of drainage is made specifically to dispose of one wastewater only. For example, in a plant a special channel is made to dispose of used production water, so it should not be mixed with other disposal.

Multi Purpose

Multi purpose drainage is used to dispose of a number of different wastes. Usually, this type is used in residential areas to drain household waste as well as rainwater.Based on the cost, multi-purpose drainage will be more effective than others. But if you worry about the excess pollution that can harm your health, it is better to separate water disposal from other disposal.

Problems of Drainage System

In Indonesia, drainage is one of the public facilities. Therefore, the drainage will not be detached from the surrounding conditions due to climate change or weather. A number of people with different habits also use drainage simultaneously. These factors can cause serious problems with the drainage system. So it requires us as good citizens to anticipate it. Let's find out what are the most common problems with a drainage system!
  1. Increase in water discharge due to narrowing of the drain from the waste pile
  2. Placement in dense areas, thus inhibiting the mapping of water flows that should be effective
  3. There is a change in land use
  4. Deviations in the initial functioning of drainage systems, such as rainwater gutters for disposing of industrial waste
  5. People are less concerned about preserving drainage
  6. Capacity is too small from need, causing overflow

Tips for Building Drainage Systems on Houses

Now, you have knew about the problems that can arise due to the construction of drainage. Therefore, to avoid that, we need to have a good planning before building good drainage. As a solution, here are some tips that you can do:
  • Adjust the size of the aqueduct to the capacity needed
  • Precise in choosing pipes that match the quality
  • Make a small ditch to avoid excess puddles
  • There is no need to cover the entire section of the drainage channel for water infiltration
Don't forget that drainage is a must-have component during the manufacturing process for the comfort of home residents. Because with a good irrigation system, the house will be healthier too.
